Scrolling Down

Artist Statement

The title of this work, Scrolling Down, refers both to ancient scrolls and the modern computer term, scrolling-down. Mixed media collaged mono-prints, hand-made paper, drawings, and photographic images, compose a series of scrolls, completed in 2021-2022, during and after an artist residency in Athens, Greece.

While in Athens and beyond, I saturated myself with museum visits, marveling at the ways that communication and stories evolved from carving into stone tablets, to writing on papyrus. Columns, statues and architecture were also points of reference.

In the process of collecting images in Greece, I also collected some images from my childhood as well as what was happening in the US at that time ( BLM) and included references to that. The scrolls also incorporated fragments of old mono-prints, I had been saving over the years.

The resulting work is a loose, referential, hopefully evocative ‘story” or story- fragment of my life. It is meant to hang mid-air or against a wall and drape down to the ground.
